This excursion will take you to "Zaanse Schans" a small 40 house community just to the north of Amsterdam, on the banks of the river Zaan. On the turn of the 18th century, this region was an industrial area with about 700 windmills in use. Nowadays there are only 5 left. The typical houses here are made of green timber. A visit will be paid to a windmill and a wooden shoe factory. Also you will have the opportunity to do some shopping and maybe acquire a pair of wooden shoes yourself! Afterwards you will visit Edam, a city in the Dutch Province of Noord-Holland famous for its delicious Edammer’ cheese.
